About Plot and Pantry

Penny Foxwell

I set up Plot and Pantry to pass on the wonderful experience I have had of growing my own food over the past ten years. It has been a journey that has enabled me to recover my sense of self, my creativity and my emotional health through the simple act of working with nature. Through every season, working the soil, sowing seeds, nurturing plants, bringing in the harvest and preserving delicious fresh food for the whole year. I started growing food because it made me happy, because I needed to save money and because fresh, nutritious food was often not available to buy. Then it became a passion and a huge part of my life. I have raised pigs, made salamis and prosciutto, preserved fruit into jams and chutneys, kept hens, grown every sort of vegetable and flower, preserved the crops and become self sufficient in fruit and vegetables as a result. I see my plot and my pantry as two halves of a whole….the satisfaction comes from growing in the plot what I need in the pantry and what comes in from the plot dictates how I fill my pantry. Hence the name Plot and Pantry! Living simply, sustainably and seasonally has brought me great fulfilment, excitement, healing and a sense of calm. I want to pass it on to you!

About Recover and Grow

Plot and Pantry's Seasonal Course

Recover and Grow is my practical course where I take you through each month of the year. I share what I have learned in each season about growing, cooking and preserving food through video tutorials, downloadable fact sheets, photos and growing schedules. It's also where I share my tips for living close to nature and for better mental health and emotional wellbeing. I want to recover and share the traditional skills that our grandmother’s knew - how to live through the seasons, knowing what plants to grow and how to care for them, to cook from scratch and to preserve. I want to pass on my experience and inspire you try it - to know that it is possible to live more simply, creatively and authentically and to feel better. Working with nature with your hands in the soil can help you to do this! I so want to share with you the sense of wellbeing that it has brought me! I chose the name Recover and Grow for this seasonal course because that is my story. I have recovered and grown in myself as well as recovering the skills needed to grow, cook and preserve plants. When I started growing vegetables in my tiny courtyard garden so many years ago I had no idea what an adventure was ahead of me, how healing and restoring it would be, how it would literally change my life. I started growing and I couldn’t stop - I just loved it. I have learned so much and I want to pass it on to you!
